Two men accused of rape at Ceannt Station fight for release
Public anger is growing as two men accused of a brutal abduction and sexual assault at a major transport hub fight for their release.
The suspects—aged 25 and 27—appeared via video link at Galway District Court, where proceedings were translated with the help of an Arabic interpreter. Each man faces severe charges, including the rape of a woman on August 1st at the car park of Ceannt Railway Station, alongside charges of false imprisonment.
Despite having already been refused bail at a special sitting of the district court, the defense has indicated plans to challenge their continued detention. The prospect of these individuals potentially securing their release back onto public streets while awaiting trial has intensified public concern.
During the hearing, Sergeant Christy Browne told the court that the State is seeking a two-week remand to obtain directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Defense counsel Liam Carroll BL informed the court that efforts are being made to arrange consultations with the defendants in prison. One of the accused also complained during the proceedings that he has been unable to contact his family, though Judge Gerard Furlong noted that prison communication matters are handled by the prison governor rather than the court.
Judge Furlong remanded both men back into custody. The case is scheduled to return to court as the legal process moves forward.
