Writing blank cheques abroad while Ireland struggles at home

Helen McEntee

Once again, the Irish government has decided that it knows better than the citizens who fund it.

This week, Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee used the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Wicklow to proudly declare Ireland's "steadfast support" for Ukraine, pushing for deeper European unity and increased pressure on Russia. In April, she jetted off to Kyiv to announce that the Irish taxpayer will be handing over another €40 million in financial support for Ukraine this year, bringing the total for 2026 alone to a staggering €65 million.

Since this conflict began, the Irish State has committed over €505 million of public money to Ukraine. While McEntee stands on the European stage acting as judge, jury, and executioner in a conflict thousands of miles away, ordinary Irish citizens are left asking a very simple question: Who gave her the right to give away our money?

The Illusion of Neutrality

Ireland is constitutionally and historically a neutral country. McEntee herself admitted that Ireland's military neutrality means we do not join military alliances, but she immediately undermined that by stating it does not stop us from supporting other countries and that we "will not be found wanting" when EU colleagues need assistance.

The government's actions completely contradict the spirit of neutrality. We are funneling millions into "non-lethal" military support and humanitarian aid, aligning ourselves lockstep with the foreign policy of massive military powers. The Irish people never voted to bankrupt ourselves funding a proxy war in Eastern Europe. Yet, the political class has decided that our neutrality is just a technicality to be ignored whenever they want to look good in front of the European Union.

A One-Way Street

When has Ukraine ever stepped in to save Ireland? When the Irish State was on its knees during the financial crash, when our people were forced to emigrate by the hundreds of thousands, did Ukraine hand over millions in stabilization support? Not once.

This is a war that is fundamentally not ours. Yet, the government is treating the public purse like a bottomless ATM for a foreign nation, all while pretending they are acting on behalf of the Irish people.

Charity Begins at Home

The absolute hypocrisy of this government is sickening. Minister McEntee proudly states that this €40 million will go toward emergency shelter, medical care, and rebuilding infrastructure in Ukraine.

Where is the emergency shelter for the record number of homeless people sleeping on the streets of Dublin, Cork, and Galway? Where is the medical care for the thousands of Irish citizens languishing on years-long hospital waiting lists? Where is the financial support for working families who cannot afford to heat their homes this winter or put food on the table?

While Irish citizens are being crushed by the cost-of-living crisis, the government is enthusiastically writing blank cheques to a foreign country. They are prioritizing international praise over the survival of their own people. The public is furious, and they have every right to be. The government needs to remember who they work for, before the public reminds them at the ballot box.

Had enough? Record it.
